The beginning of the 21st century has had an explosion of information output and information sources. Information literacy equips students with the critical skills necessary to become independent lifelong learners. Information literacy is having the ability to identify the best sources of information for a given need, understand how that information is organized, locate, knowing how to evaluate critically, synthesize information gathered in order to effectively use it for the issue at hand or best present and share it ethically.
Digital literacy includes the ability to find and use information (information literacy), but goes beyond this to encompass communication, collaboration and teamwork, social awareness in the digital environment, understanding of e-safety and creation of new information. Both digital and information literacy are underpinned by critical thinking and evaluation.
n addition to information and digital literacy, visual literacy is an important component to our component to our curriculum. Visual literacy enables an individual to effectively find, interpret, evaluate, use, and create images and visual media. Students will begin to become critical consumers of media and begin to understand and analyze the contextual, cultural, ethical, aesthetic, intellectual, and technical components involved in media production and use of visual materials. A visually literate individual is able to:
• Determine the nature and extent of the visual materials needed
• Find and access needed images and visual media effectively and efficiently
• Interpret and analyze the meanings of images and visual media
• Evaluate images and their sources
• Use images and visual media effectively to elicit emotion
• Design and create meaningful images and visual media
• Begin to understand many of the ethical, legal, social, and economic issues surrounding the creation and use of images and visual media, and access and use visual materials ethically
