8th Grade Computer Science Class Mission statement
Our classroom environment is based on what is truly important to us as a community -- engaging students in rigorous, real-world inquiry and project-based education, that empowers learners. Respect, responsibility, perseverance, kindness and acceptance are the Core Values and guiding principles that dictate expectations, behavior and actions as students critically think, research, and learn 21st century skills and as they work towards becoming informational, visual and digitally literate.
Students will learn to use HTML and CSS to design their own web pages in Web Lab. Students explore programming concepts through the development of animations and games in Game Lab.Project Based Learning (PBL) helps students develop skills for Living in a Knowledge-Based, highly technological society. Solving highly complex problems requires that students have both fundamental skills (reading, writing, and math) and 21st century skills (teamwork, problem solving, research gathering, time management, collaboration, creativity, communication, information synthesizing, utilizing high tech tools, etc.). With this combination of skills, students become directors and managers of the learning process, guided and mentored by a skilled teacher. This is Project Based Learning and what we will be doing in Computer Science Class.

Homework #1: Students need to sign and have a parent or guardian sign the "Welcome" letter sent home on the first day of class and return it by the second day of class for a grade.
CSD Unit 1 - Problem Solving
Unit 1 is a highly interactive and collaborative introduction to the field of computer science, as framed within the broader pursuit of solving problems. You’ll practice using a problem solving process to address a series of puzzles, challenges, and real world scenarios. Next, you’ll learn how computers input, output, store, and process information to help humans solve problems. The unit concludes with a project in which you design an application that helps solve a problem of your choosing.

CSD Unit 2 - Web Development
In Unit 2, you’ll learn how to create and share the content on your own web pages. After deciding what content you want to share with the world, you’ll learn how to structure and style your pages using HTML and CSS. You’ll also practice valuable programming skills such as debugging and commenting. By the end of the unit, you’ll have a personal website that you can publish to the Internet.

CSD Unit 3 - Animations and Games
In Unit 3, you’ll build on your coding experience as you program animations, interactive art, and games in Game Lab. The unit starts off with simple shapes and builds up to more sophisticated sprite-based games, using the same programming concepts and the design process computer scientists use daily. In the final project, you’ll develop a personalized, interactive program.

CSD Unit 4 - The Design Process
Unit 4 introduces the broader social impacts of computing. Through a series of design challenges, you will learn how to better understand the needs of others while developing a solution to a problem. The second half of the unit consists of an iterative team project, during which teams have the opportunity to identify a need that they care about, prototype solutions both on paper and in App Lab, and test solutions with real users to get feedback and drive further iteration.

Grades for class work will be averaged and worth 45% of the final grade. Class Preparation grades will be averaged and worth 10% of the final grade. Tests and projects will be averaged and worth 45% of the final grade.
Tests & Projects (worth 45%): Test will be given at different times throughout the semester. The format may include: multiple choice, short answer, and short essay. Tests may also incorporate tasks or skills using computers and/or software. Projects are done in the computer lab, both individual and group projects. Each project will be graded using a rubric, which is available online.

Class Preparation (coming to class prepared) is worth 10% of the final grade.
Class work (Worth 45%): It is critical that class time be used to work diligently. All projects are completed in class and do not require students to do work at home.
Class Preparation (Worth 10%): To be prepared for class you should come with the necessary materials for your projects, such as, family photos, books, etc. The dates these materials are due will be discussed.
Missed Classes: If you miss a class it is your responsibility to get and complete the assignment. If the assignment requires you to use software that you do not own or are unable to use from home, it is your responsibility to set up a time with me to catch.
Late Work: Extensions will be given to projects due to changes in schedules, school closings, illness, technical issues and other factors. There will be no reduction in grades when work is handed in during the extension timeframe. Any work handed in after the extension period will receive a 10% reduction for each day it is late. The lowest grade given is a 50.
Extra Credit: Points may be earned for doing work beyond what was requested of the class. This will be done at the teacher’s discretion. Extra credit work will not be used to replace projects not completed, but will be used to earn additional points after completing required work.
Other EXTREMELY important notes
Punctuality is very important. Every three tardies equals an unexcused absence as well as a detention. Administrative action will be taken for excessive tardiness.
Assignments will be given deadlines. Assignments/Projects handed in late will be penalized 10 points per day and will not be accepted after five days late. You will be able to revise any project you wish for a higher grade one time, which must be done on your own time and will be due no later than one week after the deadline.
Equipment and Handling
The equipment (cameras, microphones, computers, etc.) receive a pretty heavy workload throughout the year. However, please be mindful and respectful of the value of these professional tools. We’re lucky to have the facility we’re afforded, so please treat it accordingly. When just one piece of equipment is damaged, the entire program suffers.
